Slovenia which is part of the EU can be a great springboard for those who are planning to reside and work in Europe in the future. Beautiful nature, high standard of living, high-quality free education and a well-developed social security system in this country attracts a large number of immigrants. But to receive a citizenship of Slovenia is rather difficult.
Mountains, sea and ... good neighbors
Slovenia is ideal for a comfortable residence. Geographically, it is located in the center of Europe and is bordered by such successful countries as Austria, Italy and Croatia. A favorable climate, sea, mountains, resorts and friendly locals are the additional benefits, which also contribute to the interest of foreigners to this country. In addition, Slovenia recognizes dual citizenship, which is a great virtue.
Who can obtain Slovenian citizenship?
Under the law of that country a person whose parents (or one of them) have Slovenian citizenship may become Slovenian citizen. The country of birth does not matter. But the children of foreigners born in Slovenia do not acquire the status of a citizen of this country. As for the children adopted by citizens of Slovenia, they are equal to the family and get the status of a citizen on the basis of the nationality of adoptive parents.
If we are talking about foreigners, the easiest way to get a residence permit, a permanent residence, and then the coveted passport of the citizen of Slovenia is business immigration. A foreigner can register a company in the territory of the country (the most common option is Ltd.), open a bank account and obtain a work permit (which is issued for one year and then extended). You can then apply for a residence permit (it necessarily requires a certificate of clear criminal record).
You can still become a citizen by naturalization. But you will have to abandon the existing citizenship. In addition, there are other requirements: you must be over 18 years and have no problems with the law (priors, convictions), to know Slovenian language well and be financially well-to-do, and most importantly – to reside in Slovenia for at least ten years, five years of which - necessarily with the permanent residence status. But the required period of residence may be revised and reduced, but only in cases where the citizenship is claimed by:
- descendants of Slovenian immigrants to the third generation (residence time in this case is one year);
- spouses of Slovenian citizens (residence time in the country is one year for them as well);
- the persons who have rendered important services to the state (in these cases Slovenian citizenship is given for special merits and residence in the country is not required).
- And minor children, whose parents are in the process of naturalization, shall be entitled to be naturalized along with their father and mother. While adolescents over 14 years of age must personally confirm their desire to become citizens of Slovenia.
