Residence permit in Greece

Life in the country with the multi-millennial history is convenient due to its mild climate; it is interesting due to thousands of ancient monuments and quiet because crime rate is very low in Greece. People here don’t enjoy working too much – they enjoy having a rest, often and differently. This is one of reasons which attract tourists: the Greeks are good in relaxing but it is also pleasant for the country guests to spend time with them.

The RP (residence permit) for Greece does not only give grounds for staying in the motherland of the Olympic gods; a person with the Greek residence permit can forget concerns about visas for visiting European Union, to cross borders of the European countries freely and not to concern when duration of staying in any country of European Union is nearly over.

But this is not the end – the Greek residence permit gives the possibility to open accounts in European banks, take credits there, purchase real estate in Europe and even register a marriage with citizens of European Union! However, this is not the final benefit: the RP for Greece gives the possibility to study in European higher educational establishments and to send children for studies there; moreover, the procedure of obtaining a visa to countries of North America, Canada and the USA, is considerably simplified. There are plenty of benefits and privileges, but how to obtain this cherished residence permit?

Obtaining the RP in Greece

Ways to obtain the RP can be divided into several categories:

• Financial (company incorporation, investments, etc.);
• Education or work;
• Real estate purchase;
• Marriage registration.

An entrepreneur must obtain a permit for business activity and a Greek visa, after which he/she can start his/her financial activity. There are several ways of business immigration: company registration or investing. Each way implies investing a rather considerable amount of finance. Fulfillment of financial terms gives the right for the RP obtaining.

A good variant is to prove a person’s financial independence, with the purpose of which it is necessary to provide documents on the amount of monthly income exceeding the threshold of EUR 2,000 but such variant forbids to work on the territory of Greece, though the rest of the rights remain.

Students or workers have the right for obtaining the RP in Greece in case of submitting a document of acceptance to a higher educational establishment or a labor agreement. Students also have to submit information on sufficient funds for stay, and office seekers have to submit a document confirming that no EU citizens wishing to accept this position were found (such document is usually prepared by an employer).

For the time being, real estate purchase does not yet give the official right for obtaining the RP for Greece, although mass media have already announced that it will become possible soon.

Another variant is marriage with a Greek citizen. After marriage registration, a foreign spouse will be able to execute the RP.
